Out with Becky

My cousin Becky called me to tell me that one of my mothers cousins passed away and calling hours were today at a funeral parlor in Lewiston.  I offered to drive her to Lewiston.  We met up at my house and headed out  Before going to the funeral parlor, we stopped at the Oxbow house to spend a few minutes with Carrie.

We only stayed about fifteen minutes at the funeral parlor, and took time to greet Mr. Lamberts wife and look at the pictures on display.

Becky told me she would treat me to supper, and for me to choose a place.  When we got to Sanborn, I recalled HOOVERS

and suggested it to Becky.  She had never been there and she liked that idea.  I showed her where the Hoovers Farm and Farm Store are, and then we went over to the restaurant on Ward Road.

We both ordered off of the specials board. Becky had the polish sausage/cabbage/pierogis and I had the four piece fried chicken with cheesy potatoes.  We both had a small bottle of chocolate milk.  The total bill was a little less than twenty dollars.  What a bargain!!!!  Then we both had a small ice cream cone.
They offer both Perry's frozen custard and Perry's hard ice cream.  I had heavenly hash and it really was heavenly.

CARD PARTY AND FASHION SHOW AND DESERTS: Presbyterian Home 2/26/18

Elaine invited me to this event, so I bought a ticket from her.  I invited Pam and she said yes, but she came down with a headache and decided not to go.

This was the FIRST ANNUAL Card Party and Fashion Show.  Deserts were a big part of it.  I sat with Darlene, her friend Joyce, Nancy.  Elaine was working (selling tickets at the door) and hardly had a chance to sit with us.

Bling was there
with a table of items for sale and they put on a fashion show, which was fun.

One of the models is 99 years old!   I think this is her on the left.

The deserts were wonderful and I ate too much. Elaine's mini ice cream cakes were delicious!!! We had a game at our table, but we did not play.
There was a basket raffle, but I did not buy any tickets.  Elaine won a gift certificate for WalMart and Joyce won  bag with a couple of books (I think from the History Center).

I forgot to take my camera, but I might be able to find a few pictures on the facebook page or web page for the Lockport Presbyterian Home.

Return to New York: February 23 and 24th, 2018

After Peg and I had breakfast in the condo on Thursday the 23rd, we loaded up the rental car for the return drive.  It was a tight squeeze but we figured it out! We stopped at McDonalds so David could get TWO servings of Sausage Gravy and Biscuits, which he ate while Peggy drove.  Then we headed north towards home.

We drove all day, first through North Carolina, then Virginia, then West Virginia and into Pennylvania.   In North Carolina David pointed out Lake Norman, which he thinks is quite beautiful.
The bridge goes right over the middle of the lake.  It really is beautiful.  David wanted to stop at a large outlet store which he has stopped at in the past, and get a cigar, but when we arrived, we found it closed.
Further research showed that it closed up in December of 2017.   It sounds like it was an interesting place, with a giant humidor (I think this means a spot where smoking is allowed).   Cigars was what was drawing David, but he said they sold a LOT of other items.

We continued on to Virginia.  I am pretty sure that I took this picture  at a place where we stopped to get gas and snacks.

In West Virginia we drove over this bridge THE NEW RIVER GORGE BRIDGE

We had supper at PRIMONTE BROS. south of Pittsburgh.
they mostly offer sandwiches PITTSBURGH STYLE meaning the sandwiches have coleslaw and French fries in them.
I requested those items on the side.  The place was very loud, but it was Friday night, after all.

We arrived at our lodging fairly late.  TOWNPLACE SUITES by MARRIOT, just north of Pittsburgh in Cranberry, PA.   We had a very nice suite with a full kitchen.  Saturday morning we had breakfast there, included in the price of the room.  They offered a LOT  of choices.  I had a small bowl of oatmeal, a half a bagel, half a banana, a yogurt,  a muffin, and a fried egg, also two glasses of orange cranberry juice.

I think we headed out a few minutes after ten, but after driving a few minutes Peggy realized she had left her wedding rings on the bed, so we returned and retrieved them.   It was just a few hours drive to Lockport, where they dropped me off before returning the rental car to the Buffalo airport.

I was pretty much a slug the rest of the day, just too tired to do much of anything.

DAY EIGHT OF SOUTH CAROLINA TRIP (RETURN TO SAVANNAH)

We dropped David off at a golf course and then headed to Savannah.  Once there, we found a parking spot and then we took THE DOT (free bus/trolley)
to get closer to the center of town. We decided to go to the PROHIBITION MUSEUM.

It was great and I learned a lot.

Then we walked around the CITY MARKET, and went into a few shops, I had a small ice cream cone and we sampled PRALINES,
which are nuggets made of caramel and pecans, which melt in your mouth!!!!and I had a gelato (I think it was chocolate almond) and it was sooooooooooooo good.
and saw the Haitian monument.
and then walked back to the car (it was a lot closer than we thought).
Then we drove to a couple of the small parks before leaving Savannah.  Picked David up, went to Wegmans, and then decided to go to the OLD OYSTER FACTORY for supper where once again we had two buckets and two baskets.  This time we tried the lamb lollipops, which I liked.   Back to the condo to pack for leaving first thing tomorrow morning.

DAY SEVEN OF SOUTH CAROLINA TRIP

Peg and I walked to the ZION CHAPEL OF EASE CEMETERY where William Edings Baynard is buried.  He was a wealthy cotton planter.  He built his own mausoleum in 1846 and it is the oldest structure on the island.
We met up with David back at the condo.  The plans were for the three of us to go to GODS GOODS (a consignment shop) and then drop David off at his golf course and then go to Bluffton for the afternoon.  However, I had a bout of diarrhea and stayed at the condo.  After dropping David off, Peggy came back and picked me up.

We drove to Bluffton. Our first stop was at the Heyward House Visitors Center.
We picked up a map of a walking tour, looked around at the period rooms inside
and checked out the replica of a slaves cabin
and a kitchen out in the rear.
Then we headed out to explore.  We followed the walking tour map and saw several historic houses.  This particular one was not in the brochure/map, but I think it is one of the most interesting houses we saw.

We also checked out  area with the small shops.  Peg referred to it as THE PROMENADE, she has been there before.  We went into this Spanish grocery store:

Then we went to the Bluffton Oyster Company

The business is built on shells from previous shucking operations  over the last 200 years.

Then to the library (I found the Bluffton Bookmark Geocache) and bought a bunch of non fiction books at the BOOK SALE, for a quarter each.
and then to the Palmetto Oaks Sculpture Garden

picked David up
and rushed to get to Stellini's in time for the early bird special.  We just made it.  I had the eggplant parmesan

Back to the condo..................I was exhausted.

DAY TRIP TO SAVANNAH: February 20, 2018 (Day Six)

Before heading to Savannah, we went to McDonalds so David could get some breakfast food, and then we headed south.  We stopped for gas, and while there, Peggy threw out an old pair of sneakers.
Along the way we passed this man who we thought might be homeless
We turned around and gave him some cash and some food.  I never could really read his sign.
This bridge took us over to Savannah.  We looked for a homeless settlement that Peg and David saw two years ago, but it appears to have been dismantled and cleaned up.
Our first stop in Savannah was at a large visitors center which appeared to be in an old, huge train station.  We thought about taking a trolley ride, but opted instead to drive around and see the sights ourselves.  It turned out that we drove directly behind a trolley
We saw many beautiful historic buildings and small parks.  Here  are a few pictures:

as well as churches and a couple of interesting looking cemeteries.

When we were done following the trolley, we found a parking spot from which we could walk to the River Street area (RiverFront).  It is a long strip of shops along the river.  You have to walk down stairs or a ramp to get to them.

                                                        Container ship
Also, we found a geocache not too far from the WW2 Monument.

After that we found Ruth Chris' Steak House
David seemed to really enjoy reading the menu and planning a future trip to a Ruth Chris in Niagara Falls, NY.

Then we found LADY AND SONS.
We had only planned to go to the gift shop because Peg and David were disappointed when they had the buffet there two years ago.  They said the buffet looked much better, so we decided to eat there.  First we walked to the car and drove closer to the restaurant.
The BUFFET at LADY AND SONS was great!  And only eighteen dollars.

Then we headed back to HHI.  We made one stop while still in Georgia....when we saw an abandoned fireworks shop.
We decided to NOT get out of the car when we saw this sign.

We arrived back at the condo around 7:30 or so.
